Boyd vs. Jamieson in Champlain Stakes Friday

by Karen Briggs, WEG Media

Campbellville, ON — Over C$260,000 is up for grabs on Friday night (September 5) at Mohawk, as 15 freshman pacing fillies line up for the Champlain Stakes.

Carl Jamieson’s Break The News is expected to shine in the first of the two Champlain divisions (race two, post time 7:50 p.m.). The rookie daughter of Western Ideal-Yankee Scandal, a $40,000 yearling purchase at Lexington last year, has just a single win to her credit but has never been out of the money in eight starts, and has already bankrolled $208,858 for Jamieson and partners Thomas Kyron, Arthur Slack, and George Harrison.

Break The News is listed at 2-1, but she may have competition in the form of a filly named Cheap Motel, rated the second choice at 5-2. The daughter of Grinfromeartoear-Media Queen is lightly raced, but has scored two wins in three starts thus far. Rod Boyd trains Cheap Motel for the Bulletproof Enterprises.

In the second Champlain division (race six, post time 9:10 p.m.), pupils of Boyd and Jamieson will square off again. Boyd sends out Terroronthebeach (Western Terror-Beach Guest), who was a handy winner of the Eternal Camnation Stakes at Mohawk three weeks ago, while Jamieson has entered the Artiscape-Tear Drop daughter She’s A Fan, who won two legs of the Whenuwishuponastar Series at Mohawk in July and was most recently second in the She’s A Great Lady Consolation on August 30.

The Champlain Stakes for 2-year-old pacing fillies is the feature on Friday night’s card, leading up to a star-studded evening of stakes action on Saturday, September 6, including the first-ever appearance of 3-year-old phenoms Somebeachsomewhere and Deweycheatumnhowe on the same card.
