Columbus, OH — Brett Smith, 34, of Bainbridge, N.Y. died on Wednesday (Sept. 7) as the result of injuries sustained while jogging his horses at Afton Driving Park. Smith is survived by: his parents, Gary and Tracey Smith; sisters: Jennifer (Adam) Safford, Sara (Jonathan) Smith and Abbey Smith; and brother, Kyle (Tammy) Smith; niece, Kennedy Safford and nephew, Andrew Smith.

Smith was an avid and beloved member of the horse racing community and was a regular competitor at Monticello Raceway, Tioga Downs, Vernon Downs and Saratoga. In his eight-year career, Smith amassed $523,043 in earnings as a trainer from preparing 1,044 horses to take the gate.

Although his horses may not have competed in black-type events, Smith owned such stalwart competitors as Extreme Yankee (Yankee Glide, $205,463), Lucid Thoughts (Cash Hall, $290,495) Caledon Dream (Yankee Glide, $161,067) and Wild Artist (Real Artist, $125,733).
