Columbus, OH — John Campbell, the ultimate legend in this sport and a member of the U.S. Harness Racing Hall of Fame and the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame, left the door ajar after what could be his final appearance in the sulky in the Legends Day Trot at Clinton Raceway on Sunday (July 30).

“In all probability it’s my last drive,” he relayed to the media on a picture-perfect Ontario day.

It’s standing room only to witness John Campbell’s final drive.

The winner of 10,667 races, who has amassed $299.9 million in North American purses and more than $300 million worldwide, Campbell’s victory total ranks ninth among all drivers in North American harness racing history and his purses exceed second-place David Miller by more than $82 million.

An icon in this sport, Campbell is now the president and CEO of the Hambletonian Society, where his presence will certainly be felt for years to come.

Unfortunately, his stint in the sulky this afternoon resulted in a break in stride by Happy Holiday, after being sent first-over into the first turn as the 1-5 favorite from post position five. Steve Condren and Lady Caterina ultimately crossed the finish line in front of all their rivals.

Campbell, gracious as always, was appreciative of all the fans that have supported him throughout his career and once again, acknowledged his family’s love and understanding as the backbone of his success.

“There have been many times that I haven’t been able to attend important events because of my career,” he said. “But they have always been patient, have understood and supported me. They’ve never questioned things, just supported me with love, and for that I can’t thank them enough.”
