Campbell continues dominance at the Downs

by Michael Sweeney, for Scarborough Downs

Scarborough, ME — Drew Campbell, the 2007 dash-winning champion at Scarborough Downs, has wasted little time pressing forward into the brand new harness racing season in Maine with daily demonstrations of the driving abilities which have made him a perennial powerhouse in the Pine Tree State.

Campbell followed up on Friday’s driving double by posting a four-bagger performance on Saturday (April 19) afternoon at the Downs as he continues to set the Scarborough standard. More impressively from the punters’ perspective, four of Campbell’s six weekend victories have come from the ranks of his own racing stable.

“It’s gratifying to see the results of all that off season work — it’s been a pretty hard winter up here in Maine,” Campbell said following Saturday’s card. “I’m fortunate to have good owners to work for and to have the chance to catch-drive for some of the top stables at Scarborough. Right now, things are certainly on a roll.”

Campbell won Saturday’s opener with Heidi Rohr’s Mannart Sound Wave then the fourth race with Deborah Whittemore’s My Special Angel — both pacers racing toward their second consecutive victories in rein to the top teamster.

Am I Next A (The Ben, Bill and Will Stable) was next on Campbell’s dance card as he steered the 13-year-old class-master to a zippy 1:57.1 tour of the seaside oval before delivering up the favorite mid-daily double ($6.40) with his own pacer, CC Bag A Luck.

Campbell has now won 12 races since the Scarborough season reopened last Friday.

In other action, the veteran pacer The Boy N got the job done in Open company with driver/trainer Shawn Gray engineering a gut-checking gate-to-wire victory over Skitsofrantic and Barenit while lighting up the toteboard at 22-1 and keying a huge $1,038.80 trifecta return.

The victory marked the first winner’s circle engagement from four starts this season for the 11-year-old pride and joy of owners Gaetan Cloutier and Mary Jane Parker of Leeds, Maine. His 1:56.2 clocking was the fastest of the young Scarborough harness meet.

Scarborough Downs proudly features live harness action every Friday and Saturday afternoon with first post slated for 4:15 p.m (EDT). The popular Sunday matinee performance rolls in behind the gate at 1:30 p.m.
