Campbell to drive in NYSS race at Vernon

Vernon, NY — Hall of Fame driver John Campbell will make a rare appearance at Vernon Downs on Tuesday night (July 15) to participate in the track’s $233,930 New York Sires Stakes feature for 3-year-old colt and gelding trotters.

The Downs will showcase six divisions of the NYSS headliner during its 10-race program that will begin at 6:00 p.m.

Campbell, the Standardbred sport’s all-time money winning driver with more than $254 million, recently obtained his 10,000th career victory. He’ll be driving Big Apple Deli from post eight in Tuesday’s seventh race for trainer John Simpson, Jr., also a Hall of Fame member, and owner Lon Frocione.

Campbell, considered one of harness racing’s all-time great horsemen, was inducted into the sport’s living Hall of Fame in 1990.

Downs Doings: Tuesdays in July are Family Nights at Vernon, highlighted by backstretch barn tours starting at 5:00 p.m. at the clubhouse gate. Youngsters 12 and under will receive a free meal at the trackside concession venue and a free horse toy.
