Oliver Cleo could not hold off Camshaft Hanover (3), who prevailed by a half-length in 1:50.3.

Camshaft Hanover made a bold move down the backstretch as an early battle between Laguna Beach and Oliver Cleo brought the field to the half in a brisk 53.4. He drifted into the three-path on the final turn, allowing Oliver Cleo to slip out from behind a tired Laguna Beach and briefly seize the lead. But Oliver Cleo [$3.40, $2.40] could not hold off Camshaft Hanover, who prevailed by a half-length in 1:50.3. Thanks For Stoppin [$3.60] closed off the swift early fractions to finish third, just three-quarters of a length behind them.

“He gets a little bumpy [gaited],” Brennan noted of Camshaft Hanover. “He’s got a couple of issues with his feet, but [trainer David Pinkney Jr.] took care of it. He was better than last week. He was putting in a couple of steps on the turn, but he took off in the stretch real good. He’ll do that – get bumpy and almost run – but he gets that pace [gait] in. I just got lucky enough he landed on the pace. The leaders were tiring, and he paced good to the wire.”

Camshaft Hanover has now won 10 of 53 career starts and $163,475 for Ian Smith of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. The son of Artiscape-Cams Little Star was a $7,000 yearling purchase at the New Jersey Classic Sale.
