Canadian Breeders Championships spotlight 3-year-old talent

Campbellville, ON — The Maple Leaf Trot is the marquee event on this Saturday’s (July 25) star-studded stakes card at Mohawk, but Canadian pride will also be celebrated with four C$150,000-plus divisions of the Canadian Breeders Championships, for 3-year-old colts and fillies by Canadian sires.

Sophomore pacing fillies lead off the CBC in race two (post time 7:51 p.m.), and recent Fan Hanover winner Not Enough is likely to attract the lion’s share of the attention. She defeated My Red High Heels in last week’s elimination round to win by a head in 1:52.1, and in fact is unbeaten as a 3-year-old thus far, with eight consecutive victories and over C$630,000 earned for trainer Tracy Brainard and the Bulletproof Enterprises. She’ll be up against stablemates Cheap Motel and Shacked Up, as well as My Red High Heels, who won the July 13 Town Pro series final for conditioner Dave Tyrell.

Race three is the C$155,417 CBC final for 3-year-old trotting fillies, and here the flagbearer may be Canada’s 2-year-old trotting filly of the year in 2008, Elusive Desire. The daughter of Angus Hall has had an uneven sophomore season thus far, with misses in the Elegantimage Stakes as well as the Casual Breeze (both at Mohawk), but she seems to be finding her groove more recently, with an authoritative victory in the July 11 Ontario Sires Stakes Gold final at Georgian Downs, followed by a three length triumph over Friendly Amigo in last week’s CBC elim. Elusive Desire is owned by P C Wellwood Enterprises, Robert Fasken, and Charles Armstrong, and hangs her harness bag in the shedrow of Mike Keeling.

Also in this division will be fellow elim winner Jojo Bingbing, making her first foray to the Toronto area after beginning her career on Montreal/Ottawa area ovals. Marcel Barrieau trains the Quebec-bred filly (by Armbro Nash) for owners Conrad Leber and Richard Karper.

Trotting colts and geldings take to the track in the third CBC event (race six, post time 9:15 p.m.), which carries a purse of C$166,880. Per Henriksen’s I Won’t Dance, who captured his CBC elim last week and has also added an OSS Gold final trophy to his collection this spring, will garner respect in this division, as will Equity, who has a similar record, having won his OSS Gold final on July 11 at Georgian Downs. A homebred sent out by Chris Christoforou Sr., Equity has racked up seven wins and a second in nine starts so far this year.

Finally, the glamour boys step into the spotlight for the final Canadian Breeders Championship (race eight, post time 10:06 p.m.). Among the 3-year-old pacing sensations in this C$176,120 division are rivals Stonebridge Terror and OK Boromir, who delivered a thrilling duel in last week’s CBC elim, from which Stonebridge Terror emerged the victor in a photo. Jack Darling conditions and owns the son of Western Terror, while Frank Baker, Jr. sends out OK Boromir for his own stable and Ray and Janet Wilson.

Also in the mix will be Fast Pay, another son of Western Terror who was an elim winner last week and also has an OSS Gold final (June 7 at Rideau Carleton) to his credit. David Menary trains and Paul MacDonell will do the steering on Saturday night.

Come and celebrate the cream of the Canadian-bred 3-year-olds on Saturday, July 25, at Mohawk. The Canadian Breeders Championships are part of the undercard for the C$720,500 Maple Leaf Trot, along with the Armbro Flight and Roses Are Red Stakes for distaff trotters and pacers.
