Canadian trainers top in percentages

Canadian trainer Mark Winacott led all trainers in North America last year with 500 or more starts with an astonishing Universal Trainer Percentage of .499.
Winacott, a 45-year-old native of Oshawa, Ont., who now lives in Peterborough, Ont., sent 997 horses to the post last year and came back with 327 winners, 226 second place finishers, and 136 show horses. His horses earned $1,217,447.
In 2005, Winacott also put together a great season with a .380 UTR, but his horses only earned $712,449 that year. His horses compete primarily at tracks in Ontario.
In his career, Winacott has trained the winners of 619 races and has garnered almost $2.5 million in purse money.
In 2006, there were eight trainers among those with 500 or more starts who compiled a UTR of .400 or higher, quite an extraordinary feat. A percentage of .300 is often considered to be the sign of a superior trainer, while the .400 level is quite exclusive.
Last year Winacott was pursued in the percentages by Bill H. Davis, who competes with great success in western Canada. Davis raced horses in 553 races last year and brought back 185 winners to go with 112 place horses and 59 third place finishes. His UTR for 2006 was .483.
