Customize gets back on winning track

Illinois conceived and foaled trotters took center stage on Thursday night as an overflow field of 13 diagonally gaited sophomores took to the track for the $12,000 KADABRA STAKE.

Thanks in part to some expert handling from driver DAVE MAGEE, BART CAVANAGH SR’S. CUSTOMIZE continued his dominance of the state-bred set as he rolled to a one and one-quarter length victory in a career best of 1:57.1.

Starting in the second tier in what turned into a cavalry charge into the first turn, Magee managed to get Customize away in fifth as the field race double-decked to the quarter in 29.2.

Heading down the backside Magee managed to improve his position into fourth as several of the early battlers either tired or made breaks. As the field reached the halfway point in 58.3, Customize was just four lengths off of the pace setting ROCKOME VIC (ERIC LEDFORD) who had to be used very hard from post position 10.

Trotting around the final turn Rockome Vic continued to cling to a short lead as a hard charging CAMPTOWN (TIM TETRICK) engaged the leader. At that point Magee had moved Customize into the outer flow and he was following the very live cover of Camptown as the field trotted by the three-quarter station in 1:28.3.

Moving through the lane Camptown and Rockome Vic continued to battle head and head for the lead. Customize was well in hand at this point and just waiting to pounce on the top two while CHECKOUT LANE (DR ACKERMAN) anxiously awaited room in the passing lane. Uncorking a 28.1 final split, Customize effortlessly trotted right by the two leaders in the final eighth of a mile to post his fourth win in seven starts this year. GRANT’S CHARGER (ANDY MILLER) found room late after being hemmed in for most of the mile and rallied to be second while 75-1 shot THE POACHING MAN (RYAN ANDERSON) continued his vast improvement with a late rushing third place finish.

Bet to the exclusion of his rivals despite the starting in the second tier, the DIRK SIMPSON trainee returned $3.20, $2.60 and $3.00.
