Cyber Circuit Handicapping: Hambo final

by Gerry Connors

Harrisburg, PA — The biggest day of the harness racing year has the biggest race of the year as its focal point — the $1.5 million Hambletonian Trot.

This year’s edition comes full of storylines — the champion colt at two seeking to repeat at three; a great filly taking on the “boys”; a European coming in and trying to beat the best of North America. (Not to mention that the three favorites are all by Andover Hall, who stands in Pennsylvania — yay!).

Donato Hanover has won his last two, and three of his last four, by only a length, but that fact may be deceptive, as Pierce and Elliott have consistently said that they haven’t reached the bottom of this horse’s well yet. This race figures to be the contest that tests Donato the most, but we are confident that the cool Pierce will give this horse a good trip and take down the biggest prize in the sport.

Adrian Chip, although a world record setter at two at Dover, is sort of the “unknown quality” in this event. He looked very comfortable finishing last time, and driver Bergh has competed in the top European races, which gives him some insight into the 2:00 pressurecookers that the best races usually are. Let’s try to “split the Americans” in exactas with this horse.

Pampered Princess gallantly takes on males, and the fact that she is given a big shot is a great tribute to her ability, trainer Takter, and the game owners Bob and David Anderson. She trotted away from a very good colt in Xactly Hanover last time, and if the chalk has journey misfortune and she gets another top trip, don’t be surprised to see the lady in Victory Lane.

Not much betting value in this event. If you like superfectas, consider Xactly Hanover, very good last time and likely tighter, and Don’t Blink Twice — just to complete an Andover Hall superfecta! (If you like Pick Threes, you may get $4.60 on the parlay of Possess The Magic, Donato Hanover, and Always A Virgin in races 10-11-12!).

Please join us for the Hambletonian all-day “blog” on the USTA’s Hambletonian mini-site. I think that you’d have a lot of fun, and may even gain some helpful insights, both of the “fan” variety and the handicapper/bettor type. Whatever the case, enjoy this great race and this great card!

Editor’s Note: The Hambletonian final will be the 16th stop on the USTA’s Cyber Circuit. Be sure to view the race replay moments after the “official” sign is posted. Follow the entire Cyber Circuit by following this link.
