DSBF finals highlight close of Dover Downs meet

DOVER, Del. —A quartet of $100,000 Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund finals, the annual Horse of the Meet, leading driver and leading trainer awards highlighted the closing day of the 2003-04 Dover Downs meet on Thursday, April 22.

Next Flight

Next Flight became the fastest Delaware-sired winner of the $100,000 sophomore pace when Jim Morand, who drove four winners on the card, streaked away from post 7 to quickly get the lead and then staved off the two-year-old DSBF champion PT Gold Dust (Herve Filion) to notch a 1:52.2 victory cutting out the entire mile and insuring victory with a :28.4 final panel. JJ’s Artiscape (Eddie Davis) came on to finish third.

Owned by Henry Faragalli Jr. and III, Belle Bauman and trainer Del Cote, Next Flight won his third in a row in six starts this season. The black gelding by Shotgun Scott has now banked $69,950 this season and $112,530 in his career.

Jus’ Chilln Out won the DSBF title for the second straight year as George Dennis took the gray daughter of The Panderosa right to the front and was never tested in a 1:53.1 rout, one of Dennis’ three wins on the program. Miss Muffett (Clifton Green) closed along the inside to nip Costly Legs (Steve Warrington) for second-place money in the $100,000 distaff pace edition.

The victory was the second in three starts and 11th of 15 lifetime races for the Roll The Dice Stable of Wilmington, Del. The homebred has now won $57,500 this year and $148,416 in her career.

Special Mist

Special Mist chalked up her third consecutive win as a three-year-old winning the $100,000 filly trot final. Jim Thompson took the SJ’s Photo bay to the outside passing the three quarters to overtake TW Jessica (Jim King) as the field of eight turned for home and sped away for an easy 2:00 victory. Press The Issue (Ray Schnittker) moved out in the lane to catch TW Jessica and finish second.

Mist Stable, the nom de course for Carl, Barbara and trainer-driver Jim Thompson, Of Hartly, Del., is a long standing Delaware family who breed trotters. Special Mist has now won $82,398 in her two seasons of racing.

Another well know Delaware horseman, Medford Davis Jr. of Smyrna, owns Here’s Bo Bo, who also has won both the two-and three-year-old DSBF colt and gelding trotting titles. Eddie Davis Jr. eased Here’s Bo Bo away from the gate and then sat alongside Thirdtytwo Andahalf for the better part of three-quarters before pulling off to a 2:02 victory. Mr. Veendam (Bobby Kinsey Jr.) overtook Thirtytwo Andahalf for second.

Here’s Bo Bo

Here’s Bo Bo, won six of seven races at two and now is two for three in 2004. His career earnings are $120,595.

On the overnight card, Peter Tritton’s Franco New Deal N, with Steve Warrington at the controls, cut out a 1:53.1 victory to win one $40,000 Claiming Pace. Stormy Albert (Ross Wolfenden) cam within a neck of the winner with Bonn Rocket N (Billy Mann) third.

Rodney Mitchell’s Extra Fine Cam, with Eddie Davis at the helm, pounded out a 1:51 triumph in the second $40,000 claimer. Falcon’s Pharoah (Vic Kirby) and Last Resort (George Dennis) followed in second and third respectively.

During the program, Crossfire N, owned by Wendy Crissman of Camden, N.J. and 49 Racing Stable, of Georgetown, Del., was named Dover Down’s Horse of the Meet. Jim Morand won his second straight leading driver award and Josh Green was the leading trainer.
