Dunkster rolls to Open Trot win

Northfield, OH — Dean Davis’ world champion Dunkster eliminated any doubt as to his favoritism in Saturday’s Scarlet and Gray Horse Trot as he won his fourth straight race on Monday (August 27) at Northfield.

The first three wins in the streak came at Balmoral and Hawthorne.

Dunkster had no problem readjusting to the half-mile oval on which he holds the track record. Trainer/driver Kurt Sugg calmly sat him outside for most of the mile after being assigned post eight in the nine-horse field. He engaged leader Master’s Light heading to the three-qaurters and, while the leader battled gamely, was no match for the winner, who posted a 1:57 tally.

For Dunkster, the win was his seventh in 19 seasonal starts, as he moved within striking distance of three-quarters of a million dollars in career earnings.

Whotookwhat, coming off a sick scratch, raced well to finish third. She looms large in Saturday’s Scarlet and Gray Mare Trot, also part of the $1 million Ohio Super Night, which kicks off at 7:00 p.m. (EDT).

Sugg also won with BB Bunny Bell, the “hole-in-the-head” horse who was rescued by BJ Hartmann’s Miracle Farm. The 3-year-old Precious Bunny gelding equaled his 1:57.4 lifetime best while posting his second career win.

Aaron Merriman and Elliott Deaton also doubled on Monday.
