Fulton County Fair at Wauseon has many fast miles

by Bill Peters, Regional Coordinator for the Ohio Fair Racing Conference

Edgerton, OH — The Fulton County Fair at Wauseon, Ohio, completed its two-day meet on Tuesday (Sept. 6). Speed was the name of the game for the fair as six of the 21 races contested went in 2:00 or less.

The fastest pacing mile for the week went to Buckle Up (Rockin Image-Sportsmistress). The 4-year-old gelding covered the Wauseon twice-around in 1:57 to capture the inaugural edition of the Fulton County Free For All Pace. Jim Mulinix owns and trains Buckle Up with Mark Headworth doing the driving.

Mark Headworth also sat behind the fastest trotter of the week as he guided Mischievous Jesse (Jailhouse Jesse-Master’s Mischief) to a 2:00.3 winning time in the Earl Hallett Memorial Free For All Trot. The 8-year-old gelding is trained by John Kina with the Thumbs Up Stable paying the bills.

Driving honors for the fair went to 19-year-old Pierce Henry who found the winner’s circle five times. Jim Ehrsam, Sherri Holliday, and Dan O’Mara each had two training wins for the meet to share accolades in that category.

The Speed Committee of Jamie Buehrer and Jim Ehrsam are to be commended for putting on two outstanding race cards. The grandstand attendance was very good for both programs. A new television was given away on closing night in a drawing of losing pari-mutuel tickets. Kids in attendance that evening had the opportunity to participate in stick-horse races, which were conducted by the Ohio Harness Horsemen’s Association’s Project Coordinator Susan Schroeder. Schroeder also had the “Racing with the Stars” exhibit on display to provide information and entertainment for those in attendance.

Racing in the Ohio Fair Racing Conference now shifts to the Williams County Fair at Montpelier and the Wyandot County Fair at Upper Sandusky for next week’s action. Montpelier will host the trotters and pacers on Tuesday (Sept. 13) at 6:30 p.m. and Thursday (Sept. 15) at 1:30 p.m. while racing will take place at Upper Sandusky on Wednesday (Sept. 14) and Thursday (Sept. 15) with a 6:00 p.m. post each evening.
