Getthemoney wins Monticello feature

Monticello, NY — Despite having drawn post position seven — on the far outside — Getthemoney was sent off as the betting favorite and he didn’t let his backers down when Jimmy Marohn guided the 6-year-old Credit Winner stallion to his second consecutive victory in Monticello Raceway’s weekly trotting feature on Wednesday, February 27.

Getthemoney, a winner of nine races and over $56,000 in purse money last year, did it the hard way.

Getthemoney and driver Jimmy Marohn cruised to their second consecutive victory in the weekly trotting feature.

After Alan Schwartz had taken command with B’s Startrek, Marohn and Getthemoney ranged up alongside as the two headed toward the quarter pole. When they reached that stanza in :29.1, Schwartz decided to play hardball and kept Marohn’s trotter on the limb.

The two then raced head-to-head by the half in :59.1 and surprisingly Getthemoney began to trot away from B’s Startrek. Halfway around the clubhouse turn Getthemoney had command and instead of tiring like B’s Startrek did, Marohn’s charge put the pedal to the metal and opened up four lengths on the field.

Railbirds who were still concerned that Getthemoney might tire in the stretch put that thought aside as the son of Credit Winner cruised home an easy two length winner in a 2:01 clocking on a cold and windy afternoon in the Catskills.

US Stars N Stripes, who was handled by Bruce Aldrich, Jr., followed Getthemoney’s lead and though he passed traffic up the backstretch, second place was the best the veteran trotter could muster. BWT Everytime rambled home in third place for driver Kyle DiBenedetto.

Getthemoney, who was Monticello Raceway’s 3-year-old trotter of the year a few seasons back, paid $4.20 for win. He is owned and trained by Betsy Phillips of Montgomery, N.Y.

For Marohn it was his second driving victory on the card, also having won the sixth race with pacer JK Hooty, another horse trained by Betsy Phillips, who shares ownership with Carl Gillespie.
