Gro hits home run in White Sox Pace Final

Hawthorne Racecourse

The $24,000 White Sox Pace Final was captured by Gro as driver Tim Tetrick guided the 3 year-old Pro Bono Best filly to a half length victory over the favored Sherri On Ice, while Street Dancer was a length further back in third.

As the young distaffers left the gate, Pat Berry hustled the 2-1 second choice Street Dancer right into the pilot’s seat from post one. However, before Street Dancer could get comfortable, Tim Tetrick hustled Gro out first over in an all-out attack for the lead. 7-5 favorite Sherri On Ice hopped on to the tail of the live cover and when Gro cleared for the lead after a strenuous :26.4 second panel, Tetrick popped the ear plugs in anticipation of the forthcoming assault from the public choice.

Sherri On Ice and Gro raced side by side down the lane with Street Dancer coming on in third in an attempt to make it a battling triumvirate. In the end, Gro had too much left for the favored pair as Tetrick’s jump to the top going to the half proved to be the winning move.

The $12,000 first place check pushed Gro’s 2006 earnings past the $54,000 mark as the Roger Welch trainee recorded her 4th victory in 14 starts this season. The 1:52.4 mile was two ticks off Gro’s season mark registered at The Meadowlands back in March.

Hawthorne’s spring 2006 Standardbred meet runs May 6 through June 17 with live racing six days per week – Tuesday through Sunday. Post time is 7:20 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 6:30 p.m. on Sunday.
