Helen Smith elims to pair of Yankee Glide fillies

Freehold, NJ — Madame Volo and Spice Queen, both daughters of New Jersey sire Yankee Glide, captured their respective $10,000 eliminations on Friday afternoon (August 10) at Freehold Raceway and will now advance to the $90,000 (est.) Helen Smith Final on August 17.

Driver-trainer Jan Johnson scored a wire-to-wire tally with Madame Volo (Yankee Glide–Missys Goal) in the second race, finishing three lengths ahead of odds-on favorite Resortful (Dream Vacation) in 1:58.3. Spinning Class (Muscles Yankee), 3-1/4 lengths back in third, and Chez Lucie (Malabar Man) also advanced to the final from the first division.

Madam Volo races for Arden Homestead Stable and Adelaide Skoglund and improved her career record to four wins, three seconds and three thirds from 19 starts for earnings of $28,038.

Spice Queen (Yankee Glide–The Big Enchilada) rallied for a nose victory over Victoria Volo (Dream Vacation) in 1:59.4 in the third race. Brian Sears was at the lines of the Erv Miller trainee who is owned by brothers Norman and Gerald Smiley. Smokeslikeachimney (Muscles Yankee), in third, and Contender Hanover (Donerail), in fourth, also earned spots in the final.
