Horse Council Warns of Vesicular Stomatitis in Texas

Harness racing Communications, a division of the USTA

The AHC has learned of a confirmed case of Vesicular Stomatitis in horses at one premises in the State of Texas. The premises has been placed under quarantine and the Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) has begun a public information and education campaign regarding VSV and are in the process of performing an area surveillance evaluation. USDA’s Veterinary Services and TAHC will continue to monitor the situation and conduct response activities in an effort to minimize trade restrictions.

Currently, Kentucky is the only state that has put movement restrictions in place. Kentucky now prohibits the entry of all livestock from Texas. In addition, no livestock which have been in Texas during the previous 30 days will be permitted entry into Kentucky. Also, all equidae entering Kentucky from a state which has a common border with Texas must be accompanied upon entry into Kentucky with a negative test for VSV.

More detailed information from the Texas Animal Health Commission and the Division of Animal Health in Kentucky is available on the AHC website, www.horsecouncil.org.

The AHC is closely following this situation and monitoring any further movement restrictions that may be implemented by states and foreign trading partners.
