J W Dutch Treat is back on track

from Cal-Expo Raceway

Sacramento, CA — Although he holds no records at Cal-Expo, J W Dutch Treat is one of the best trotters to ever grace Sacramento.

Two years ago he was sent on an ill-fated trip to the east where, this is the ill-fated part, he had an injury so severe he had to be gelded to save his life! He got back racing last year, then was injured again in June and Sunday night, January 25, came back to the races in the early feature. The event was a trot for horses meeting certain conditions and racing for a purse of $5,000.

The public sent him off odds-on and Chip Lackey tucked J W Dutch Treat second behind Onomatopoeia after trotting an eighth, then immediately came out and took the lead passing the opening quarter. Harvey Stein was happy in the pocket with Onomatopoeia and Rocky Stidham had to settle for third with Rasberry Butch. The latter was lucky to nail third as Brother Paul was just a tad slow and had to take fourth.

Midway on the far turn Rasberry Butch tipped out first over and attacked the leader. He got to the Dutchman’s flank but no further. The three-quarters passed in 1:301.

Once straightened out in the stretch J W Dutch Treat showed his heels to the field and won in 1:583, a handsome win considering his long layoff. Onomatopoeia came past Rasberry Butch for second, and Brother Paul took fourth.

Linda Beck of Stockton still owns the handsome eight-year-old by American Winner out of the Crysta’s Crown dam Kristen’s Crown. His next check, regardless of where he finishes, will put him over $328,000 life.
