POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – After crossing the wire second in last week’s featured open pace, the 5-year-old gelding JJ’s Gazette returned to the Pompano Park winner’s circle on Saturday when capturing the $14,000 Open Handicap Pace in 1:52.2.

Driven from post two by Andy Santeramo, JJ’s Gazette settled in third place through the early stages of the Saturday feature as Sandstorm N (Daryl Bier) and No Nonsense Yankee (Wally Hennessey) battled through an opening quarter-mile in :28.

JJ’S GAZETTE (#2), driven by Andy Santeramo, charges past NO NONSENSE YANKEE (#4) in the final yards to prevail in the featured $14,000 Open Handicap Pace at Pompano Park on Saturday, covering the mile in 1:52.2.

As the pacers moved by the grandstand for the first time, No Nonsense Yankee pushed his way to the front, where he proceeded to cut out middle fractions of :56.2 and 1:24.3 as JJ’s Gazette was angled off the pylons to attack first over.

No Nonsense Yankee entered the stretch with a one-length advantage over a weakening Sandstorm N, but the gelding had no answer for the late challenge of JJ’s Gazette, who charged to the front in the shadow of the wire to triumph by a neck.

JJ’s Gazette returned $5.60, $3.00, and $2.80 for the victory. No Nonsense Yankee brought in $2.80 and $2.60 for second, while Eleven A M (Bruce Ranger) closed down the center of the track to finish third, paying $3.00.

Owned by Larry Woodhouse and trainer Dave Mogan, JJ’s Gazette has gotten his picture taken in two of his last five outings, hitting the board in each start during that span. The son of Whiteland Fella now owns a seasonal bankroll in excess of $60,000, with lifetime earnings of $226,434.
