Kentucky Sires Stakes Finals contested at The Red Mile

Lexington, KY — It was a perfect Sunday evening in downtown Lexington, as The Red Mile played host to the $2.4 million Kentucky Sires Stakes Night of Champions in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd.

Joe’s Miss Daisy romped to an eight length victory in 1:54.

The first $300,000 KYSS final on the program was also the biggest blowout, as Joe’s Miss Daisy (Dan Noble) left nothing in doubt as she took the lead around the final turn and sprinted away from her rivals down the lane to an eight length romp in 1:54.

The 2-year-old filly pacer is a daughter of Jenna’s Beach Boy-Ineverwearum and is trained by Johnson Hill, Jr. who co-owns along with Brent Tartar. It was her third win to go along with two seconds in five career starts.

The second $300,000 KYSS final on the program was for freshman filly trotters and things were quickly turned upside down as the 4-5 favorite, Valley Of Dreams (Brad Kramer), picked a very bad time to make the first break in stride of her brief career as the field assembled behind the starting gate.

That left it open for the 5-2 second choice Screaming Awesome (Mike Lachance), who took command as the field entered the final turn and never looked back en route to a 2-1/2 length win in 1:58. It was her third consecutive win in KYSS action at The Red Mile for owner-trainer Buck Sprinkle. It was also the seventh career win in nine starts for the daughter of Like A Prayer-Twilight Time.

Audition was an impressive winner in 1:56.3 for driver Dave Magee.

Audition (Dave Magee) also made it a clean sweep in three consecutive KYSS starts at The Red Mile, as he changed tactics and posted a come-from-behind, 2-1/2 length win in a dazzling 1:56.3. The 2-year-old trotter is a gelded son of Valley Victor-Hot Dog Mustard and is trained by Robert Taylor for Taylor and Robert Rietveld, Spencer Taylor, and Kevin Dixon. Sunday night’s win in the $300,000 KYSS final was his fourth of the season in seven starts.

Top Gear posted a 10-1 upset victory in the $300,000 KYSS final for 3-year-old colt pacers, as driver Dave Magee parlayed a perfect pocket trip to pick up his second KYSS win on the program and nail the previously undefeated Rockincam (Don Irvine, Jr.) in deep stretch for a length victory in a lifetime best 1:50. The gelded son of Real Desire-Trust Me Ashley is trained by Eric Adams for owner-breeder Millar Farms.

It was right back to the pattern of favorites in the $300,000 KYSS final for 3-year-old filly trotters as 3-5 choice Nannina (Brad Hanners) cut out the fractions and took them all the way to post a three-quarter length win in 1:57.1. Last year’s KYSS champ, Felicity Hall (Mike Lachance), sat the pocket behind her and finished second. It was the third win in three 2010 starts for the daughter of Valley Victor-Nannina Ambrosio, who is trained by Hanners for Freida Ivory.

Victor’s Future won his second straight Kentucky Sires Stakes title.

The only 3-year-old to make it back-to-back victories in consecutive years in their respective $300,000 KYSS final was Victor’s Future (Brian Sears) who drew away from his rivals down the lane for a four length score in a lifetime best 1:54.4. It was the seventh career win for the 3-year-old trotting colt who is the son of Valley Victor-Baby Bella, and pushed his career earnings to over $348,000 for trainer Trond Smedshammer and owner Joseph Muscara.

There were two 4-5 co-favorites in the $300,000 KYSS final for 3-year-old pacing fillies and they would not disappoint, finishing 1-2. Best Boss (Mike Lachance) was parked through a blistering half of :54.3 and finally took command as the field entered the far turn. However, Bestofbothworlds (Brian Sears) was up to take control from the tested leader midway around the turn and would fight her off down the lane for the one length victory in 1:50.4. The daughter of Cambest-Summers Soul is trained by Ron Burke and owned by Frederick Woolford and the Park Lane Stable. It was her fifth victory of the season in 13 starts and pushed her career earnings to over $201,000.

Beach Boy Tiger lit up the toteboard at odds of 16-1.

The final $300,000 KYSS final on the program may have been the most anticipated, as a full field of 10 2-year-old colt pacers lined up behind the gate after a starter’s recall had already delayed the event by a few extra minutes. Beach Boy Tiger (Dave Palone) was parked on the outside through the first three-quarters of a mile from post eight, but the 16-1 longshot would still fend off his rivals in the stretch for a one length win in 1:53.1. The gelded son of Jenna’s Beach Boy-Tigress Woods is trained by Steve Carter for Peggy Carter, Robert Reid, and Chuck Grubbs. It was his fourth seasonal victory in nine starts.

The local entrant with plenty of on track support, Camgrandest, left hard from post nine to get away second in the early going, and would re-rally down the center of the track late for trainer-driver Randy Jerrell to finish second behind Beach Boy Tiger.

Live racing action continues at The Red Mile on Monday evening, as seven of the top 3-year-old pacing fillies in the country will go postward in the $171,000 Nadia Lobell Final. First post Monday night is 6:30 p.m.
