Loco Speed takes Northfield Open Trot

by Keith Gisser, assistant publicity director, Northfield Park

Northfield, OH — For years, Northfield Park has been the place where “Every 19 minutes, the place goes crazy!” On Monday night, April 23, it was the toteboard going crazy as Charlie Wyers steered 44-1 Loco Speed to victory in the $7,500 Open Trot.

Owned by Larry Dampier and trained by John Williams, Wyers made good use of post two, rolling out of the gate before yielding to 4-5 favorite Big Charmer, who cut all the fractions but tired late, allowing Loco Speed to go by in the inside passing lane to win in 1:59.1 on a damp, but fast track. Big Charmer was second and second choice R Cowboy was third.

Loco Speed paid $90.80, $23.20, $5.20. The win was his third in eight seasonal starts, as he pushed his career earnings to $94,802.
