Longshot Southwind Catlin captures $150,000 NJSS Final

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – July 22, 2004 – Southwind Catlin [$67.60, $25.00, $16.60] held on for a head victory over Flirtin Miss [$7.20, $5.80] to win the $150,000 New Jersey Sire Stakes Final for two-year-old trotting fillies on Thursday night at the Meadowlands.

Blur [$7.00] was third by two and a half lengths.

Southwind Catlin held on for a head victory over Flirtin Miss in 1:57.2.

John Campbell sent Southwind Catlin first up down the backstretch, battled the pacesetter Jersey Gal into the stretch and withstood the late challenge of Flirtin Miss for the narrow victory.

Southwind Catlin, owned by Blue Chip Bloodstock of Wallkill, New York, trotted the mile in 1:57.2. The daughter of Muscles Yankee now has one win and one second in four lifetime starts.

The Ray Schnittker Stable trainee broke stride two of her three previous starts.

“She showed a lot of ability tonight, a lot of confidence,” said Campbell. “She just hadn’t shown what she can do in earlier races. But she showed up when the money was on the line. She’s had a couple of miscues, but she’s still a young filly.”

In two $67,200 divisions of the Niatross for two-year-old pacing colts, winning efforts were turned in by Eleven AM and Up Front Charlie.

In the first division, the second race, Eleven AM [$3.60, $2.40, $2.20] won by two lengths over He’s Determined [$4.40, $4.40] in 1:53.4. Panball Wizard [$12.20] was third by three and a quarter lengths.

A son of Falcon Seelster, owned by the Berry Stables of Staten Island, New York and trained by Bruce Saunders, Eleven AM now has three win and a second in four starts and earnings in excess of $200,000.

John Campbell was the winning pilot.

Up Front Charlie [$6.60, $3.60, $2.60] won by a neck over Open Shot [$8.60, $4.60] in the third race, the second division. Climb The Ladder [$3.60] was third by two lengths.

Up Front Charlie, a Dragon Again colt owned by C. Ed Mullinax of Amherst, Ohio, was driven by Dave Palone in 1:52.4. Trained by Kelly O’Donnell, Up Front Charlie now has three wins and a second in five starts.
