Lucky Jim was a 1:53 winner in the Horse & Groom Final.

Starting from the outside post, driver Andy Miller floated Lucky Jim off the starting gate and settled fifth before picking up cover behind Azur down the backstretch. He tipped Lucky Jim three-wide on the final turn and the trotter easily soared past the leaders for his sixth straight victory. Knight Of Intrigue tracked Lucky Jim and rallied for second, while Sauce Two K held third after carving the middle fractions. Lucky Jim returned a $2.40 win mutuel. His 1:53 clocking eclipsed the previous stakes record, held by Two Weeks Notice, by one full second.

“I think it’s his style (coming from off the pace), but it’s also the way the trips have worked out,” Andy Miller said of the trotter’s patented late rally.

Lucky Jim is undefeated since entering the barn of trainer Julie Miller this winter. He equaled the world record for a 4-year-old trotting gelding on a mile track with a dazzling 1:51.3 mile in the second leg of the Horse & Groom Series, joining the company of Flamewalker, also campaigned by the Millers, and Corleone Kosmos. The son of S J’s Photo-Hawaiian Sierra has now won eight of 26 career starts and $206,203 for owners David and John Prushnok and William Gregg.

Lucky Jim is eligible to the Arthur J. Cutler Memorial, Titan Cup and Classic Series during the 2009 Championship Meet at the Meadowlands.

“He’s only four, so we don’t want to overdo it with him, but I think he’ll step up pretty well (against the open trotters),” Miller said.
