Mare beats boys in top trot at Pompano

by Steve Wolf, Senior Director of Marketing, Pompano Park

Pompano Beach, FL — Track record holder Lori Louise ($9.80), the lone mare racing against seven male rivals, led from start to finish on Wednesday at Pompano Park in capturing the $9,000 seventh race Open Handicap Trot in 1:55.3.

Her time was one fifth of a second from tying her own track record set in 2003. Driven by Walter Ross, Jr., Lori Louise won by two open lengths for her second straight win and fourth victory this year.

Lori Louise had little trouble leaving from post six and took early command with U Toe The Bike (Bruce Ranger) getting the two hole trip to the opening quarter in :27.4. The mare then led the field to the half in :57.3 as Tom Sells moved Mighty Maori A first-over and Wally Hennessey grabbed the live second-over cover with Amazing Hanover.

At the three-quarters in 1:26.4, Lori Louise and Ross held the field at bay as Hennessey came three-wide with Amazing Hanover. But that move was to no avail as Lori Louise trotted away from the field in the stretch to win with ease. U Toe The Bike was second and Amazing Hanover was third.

A seven-year-old mare by Jurgy Hanover, Lori Louise is trained by Gordon Norris and was bred and is owned by Diane Norris and Clifford Grundy of Howell, Michigan.
