Maritime-bred is super in Scarborough Open

by Michael M. Sweeney, for Scarborough Downs

Scarborough, Maine — Super Sidney C certainly lived up to his name on Monday (April 23) as he grabbed top honors in the $6,000 Open Pace at Scarborough Downs and grabbed the attention of state of Maine harness racing fans with his bold presence and racing style.

New to The Downs, under ownership to Scott Dillon of Anson, Maine, Super Sidney C was sent away the prohibitive betting favorite by the local fans who were enjoying their first taste of Monday matinee racing at the seaside oval. Their confidence in the newcomer would prove to be well founded.

Content to follow in mid-pack while Cee H Bee N set torrid fractions, Jason Bartlett persuaded his pacer to pounce into the outside speed lane just past the three-quarter pole and commenced to draw farther away from the rest with every step.

Kept well under wraps by the impressive Scarborough driving champ, Super Sidney C coasted the final panel to stop the timer in 1:56.3 — never once having felt the tap of his teamster’s whip. The mile was the fastest at The Downs thus far this year. Cee H Bee N (Drew Campbell) held on for place while The Boy N (Shawn Gray) rallied for the show.

Super Sidney C, an old-time cross between Maritime stalwarts Harrods and This Cams For You, was bred in Nova Scotia by Morah Kerr and Mary Clare MacDonald. The 4-year-old is now trained by top Maine conditioner Richard Bartlett.

Scarborough Downs proudly features live harness action every Monday, Tuesday and Saturday afternoon with first post scheduled for 3:45 p.m. (EDT). The popular Sunday matinees get underway at 12:05 p.m.
