Michigan, Maine trainers tops in UTR for 300-499 starts

A trainer from Michigan and one from Maine topped the Universal Trainer Ratings list in 2006 for those trainers with 300-499 starts.
Paul J. Kennedy, Jr. of Manchester, Michigan compiled a .471 rating, while Valerie Grondin of Corinna, Maine finished the year with a .439 rating.
One notable trainer of national prominence in this category is George W. Teague, Jr. who finished the year with a .407 rating. That placed him fifth in this category, but his earnings of more than $3.1 million swamped the others at the top of the list.
Trotting specialists Trond Smedshammer and Jimmy Takter also ranked very high in this category.
Kennedy, 48, sent out one starter per day last year. In 365 starts, he compiled 115 wins with 68 seconds, and 57 thirds. Horses he trained earned $618,441.
Grondin, 41, had more winners, but she also started in more races. She compiled a 119-74-60 slate in 410 starts. Her horses earned $484,365.
Both Kennedy and Grondin have historically had good percentages, and in fact both have been in the rare .400+ category in the past.
Kennedy’s percentage was .442 in 1999 and then .427 in 2000, but in recent years he’s been unable to top the .400 mark.
Grondin just missed the .400 club in 2005 with a .398 percentage, but 1999 and 2000 were also good years for her, as she had percentages of .446 and .411, respectively.
