New England Sulky Championships at Scarborough

by Michael M. Sweeney, for Scarborough Downs

Scarborough, Maine — The New England Sulky Championships, the final stake on Maine’s harness calendar, make their annual appearance at Scarborough Downs on Saturday, October 20, featuring three divisions of races for 3-year-old pacers and trotters.

“The New England Sulky Championships were started over 30 years ago by a group of horsemen and women in order to provide an additional stake race for New England bred horses,” said Program Coordinator Donald Marean. “We have worked hard to keep this program in existence as it receives no outside funding with all purse revenues coming from nominating fees only. But the program is beginning to see increased participation as more folks return to the Maine Sire Stakes because of the paydown from the slot revenue from Hollywood Slots in Bangor.”

For more information regarding the New England Sulky Championship program — including information on how to nominate horses — please contact Don Marean at lindonfarm@sacoriver.net.

The New England Sulky Championships will headline a big 13-race card at Scarborough Downs on Saturday. First post time is scheduled for 12:05 p.m. (EDT).

Scarborough Downs proudly features live harness racing every Saturday through Tuesday afternoon throughout the fall season.
