Penalty Shot wins Spring Training Trot at Pocono

by James Beviglia, for Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs

Wilkes-Barre, PA — Penalty Shot overcame messy conditions to win the final of the Spring Training Trot Late Closer Series at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs on Monday afternoon, April 28, grabbing the winner’s share of the $28,700 purse.

The 2-1 favorite, Penalty Shot stayed inside early before uncorking a move on the backstretch following the cover of Irish Summer. In the stretch drive, driver Mike Simons urged Penalty Shot on by Irish Summer for a one length win in 1:58.2 on the sloppy track. Irish Summer settled for second while Quantum King Crab got the show.

A 6-year-old mare sired by Overcomer, Penalty Shot won for the third time in 2008 and 12th time in her career. Trained by Basil Aldrich, Jr. and owned by Woody Hoblitzell, Penalty Shot pushed her career earnings over $66,000 with the win.
