Martys Charm saves best for last in $25,000 Meadows pace

Meadow Lands, PA — Martys Charm blistered his final quarter in :27.4 to discourage all challengers en route to his second consecutive victory in the $25,000 Preferred Pace at The Meadows on Monday.

Away second, Martys Charm made the lead with a quarter-pole move and withstood the strong first-over bid of No Nonsense Yankee. Although he was used hard in that duel, Martys Charm responded to the urging of Randy Tharps to reel off his impressive final panel. He prevailed in 1:52.2, 1-1/2 lengths better than the closing KF St Patrick. Sneaky B Skipalong saved show.

Paul Corey trains and Martha and Gerald Baluck own Martys Charm, a 4-year-old gelded son of Aces N Sevens-Bets Mae who made it to the races only this year. He’s been a quick study, winning half his 26 starts and $134,410.

Battleshoe Victor and driver Anthony Napolitano captured the $16,000 Open Handicap Trot at the Isle Pompano Park.

The 6-year-old Valley Victor gelding had to make up a lot of ground before taking the victory. Andy Santeramo and Oratorio took the early lead and were sitting on top by five lengths when they reached the first quarter in :27.1. As they trotted over to the half-mile marker in :55.1 they were still in command by six.

Napolitano and Battleshoe Victor, sitting second, accelerated as they blew by Oratorio down the backstretch and trotted over to the three-quarters in 1:25.2.

As they turned for home Battleshoe Victor rolled on to win in 1:55.2 by 5-1/2 lengths over Farmer Jones (Denis St. Pierre) and Catamount N (Dan Clements).

It was the seventh win this year for Battleshoe Victor, who is trained by Tom Harmer and owned by Michael Polansky.

Dobson wins five at Monticello

Monticello, NY — It’s hard for a young driver to move to another racetrack and be successful without taking any race horses with him. But Billy Dobson belies that statement.

The 24-year-old reinsman out of Gaines, Michigan, with well over 240 races under his belt this year, ventured east a few months ago and now is not only a regular at The Mighty M but a force to be reckoned with on the racetrack.

Not known by any of the local trainers upon his arrival Dobson started out slow but now he is among the most sought after catch-drivers here.

A few weeks ago Dobson reined six winners on a Mighty M race card and on the Monday afternoon program he scored five more driving victories and his fifth win was his 300th victory of the season.

Dobson began Monday scoring a victory in the first race on the card with El Lobo LLC’s Queens Attack ($12.40) in a 2:02.3 clocking. He didn’t rein another winner until the seventh race when he scored a 1:59.2 triumph with Jack and Rose DeLuca’s Rootintootinfilly ($6.90).

Dobson then closed out the day with three consecutive winners. He won the 11th race with Ed Reich’s Julias Girl ($4.40) in 2:01, notching the mare’s third victory in a row. Dobson then won the 12th race with Sean Campbell’s Allikat Fighter ($6.40) in 2:01.1 and closed out the day with a 2:02.1 victory behind Jeffrey Mulcahy’s Awaring Ledew.

With those five victories Dobson now has 38 at the Mighty M since his arrival from the Midwest.
