Frog Juice was a 1:50.1 winner in the $26,000 Open Pace at Dover Downs.

They are serving Frog Juice these days at the track. The only 3-year-old in the featured race taking on seasoned veterans, Frog Juice, a Badlands Hanover-Hair She Goes gelding, waged war on front pacing Sharky Osborne (Eric Goodell) from the middle of the backstretch until deep in the lane before energizing to the wire in a lifetime fastest 1:50.1 clocking.

Jim Morand drove Frog Juice into contention after the half and raced side-by-side with Sharky Osborne before pulling away for his fifth straight win for trainer George Teague. Art Director (Tim Tetrick) closed along the passing lane to nip Sharky Osborne for place money.

Bred and owned by Gary and Barbara Iles, Frog Juice is the latest in a line of their top horses starting with $1 million winner Crew Cut Zach. Gary Iles is a barber by trade and after cutting the hair of youngsters, asks them if they wanted some “Frog Juice (hair tonic)?” The Iles name all their horses after some king of tonsorial service.

A race earlier Tetrick also came along the inside, driving Crissman Inc.’s Redford Hall (Cambest-Regal Dame) to notch a 1:51.4 score to win one of his two $23,000 Winners Over Paces. Itchy (Vince Copeland) went a big trip to finish second. Buster Mee N (Eddie Davis, Jr.) was third.

Tetrick’s fourth triumph of the night came guiding Tom Lazzaro and Harness The Power’s 7-1 I Ain’t No Fool (The Panderosa-Fool That I Am) to an easy 1:51.2 victory in another $23,000 Winners Over. Western Hot Shot (Corey Callahan) was next. Devil’s Ivy (Ron Pierce) was the show horse.

Marty’s Charm grinds out win in Meadows $25,000 Pace

Meadow Lands, PA — Marty’s Charm chased on the outside for more than a half-mile but still closed in :27.3 to capture the $25,000 Preferred Pace on Monday at The Meadows.

Marty’s Charm was sitting third before the half when Randy Tharps sent him after the leader, Hennessy Hanover. The 4-year-old gelded son of Aces N’ Sevens-Bets Mae finally subdued Hennessy Hanover in deep stretch, downing that rival by three-quarters of a length in 1:51.4. Tarver Hanover was a close-up third.

Marty’s Charm now has won 10 of his 21 career starts for trainer Paul Corey and owners Martha and Gerald Baluck.

Dave Palone drove six winners on the 15-race card.

Enjoy The Caviar wins ninth straight

Toronto, ON — One of the biggest ‘Cinderella’ stories this season at Woodbine has been that of trotter Enjoy The Caviar and that story continued on Monday night as he rolled to his ninth consecutive career victory in 1:55.1.

The 5-year-old gelded son of SJ’s Caviar is in his first season at the races for trainer Joanne Dawson who co-owns along with Holly Carr. Previous to this year, he had made one qualifying attempt in January of 2007 in which he made a break in stride and finished ninth.

Dawson qualified the trotter twice before making his pari-mutuel debut and he also made a break in the first of those, finishing fifth by 28 lengths.

The trainer added trotting hopples next time out and the gelding responded with a clean line, finishing second by a nose in 2:03.4 at Georgian Downs.

He followed that up by winning his career debut in 1:59.2 at the Innisfil oval on July 26 and has not tasted defeat since.

Enjoy The Caviar entered Monday’s race off a 1:54 lifetime-best performance on October 20 at Woodbine and was moving up to face high end non-winners for the first time in the C$25,000 contest.

As has been his style all along, the trotter left sharply for driver Mike Saftic and then never let any of his rivals get close the rest of the way.

The win not only kept his perfect record in tact, but it boosted his seasonal bankroll up to C$80,000.

Karpathos grinds out victory in Pompano trot

Pompano Beach, FL — Karpathos ($10.40) and driver Wally Hennessey were able to grind out an impressive three-quarter length triumph over race favorite Brick in winning the $16,000 top trot at the Isle Pompano Park on Monday.

Karpathos and driver Wally Hennessey won the $16,000 featured trot at Pompano Park on Monday in 1:56.2.

It was the first live Monday race card for the season. The Isle Pompano Park will now be open four nights a week for the fall-winter season every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

The fifth race feature started off with Guy Gets Girl (Bruce Ranger) going to the early lead, but before the opening quarter in :27.3, Karpathos had taken command. But that lead was short lived as Brick and driver Mickey McNichol were flying on the outside and they took the lead away from Karpathos and led the field to the half-mile marker in :56.2.

Not to be outdone, Hennessey gave up the two-hole trip in the backstretch with Karpathos and came after Brick and collared him by the three-quarters in 1:26.

The two horses then raced neck and neck down the stretch with Karpathos grinding out the victory by the finish in 1:56.2. Guy Gets Girl was third.

It was the seventh win this year for Karpathos, a 7-year-old gelding by Balanced Image, trained and owned by Geoff Howles.

Plainridge hosts another whipless race

Norwood, MA — On Monday, the second race at Plainridge Racecourse was the second whipless race in as many weeks.

The winner of the race was Mr Prep, trained by Mike Perpall and driven by Brad Irvine, who is partnered with Kurt Areano. The mile went in 1:56, which was two-fifths of a second off the horse’s fastest mile of the year.

It’s a small world, in whipless races, because Mike Perpall teamed up with Brad Irvine last week and won the first whipless race. Maybe they created a new found secret for themselves and by the way, this purse was also increased an additional $500 by track mnagement.

When the program was over, it turned out that this race was the second fastest race on the card and it was a $3,000 claimer.

The toteboard at Plainridge grabbed the spotlight after the finish of the featured sixth race.

Payoffs were sent skyward after the favorite, So Tuffian, and co-favorite Keystone Natalie, finished off the board.

Crystal Bliss (12-1) with Keven Switzer, Jr. driving, won the $5,000 Open Pace and returned $27.00, $15.40, and $14.80. M A Jackie (6-1) was second and paid $44.40 and $42.80, and Sheeza Shady Lady (17-1) paid $47.80 to show. The 7-8-2 combination resulted in a trifecta payoff of $4,419.60 while the superfecta (7-8-2-all) returned $2,211.60.

Northfield, OH — Trainer-driver John Konesky III gave This Sands Hot an aggressive drive in the slop Monday night, winning the $6,000 Open Trot at Northfield Park in 1:59.3.

Favored This Sands Hot ($5.20) was parked past the :58.4 half, but eventually cleared as the late bid of second choice Honorable Guy leveled. Athlete In Action finished third.

This Sands Hot is a 5-year-old Sand Chaser gelding owned by G.B. Reddin. The win was his seventh this year as he pushed his 2008 earnings over $52,000 and his career bankroll to $165,425 for his breeder-owner, who also campaigned his dam, the good mare Janny Might.
