San Pail surpasses C$1 million

Campbellville, ON — San Pail joined harness racing’s exclusive millionaires club with a dominant 1:54 victory in Thursday night’s C$50,000 Open Trot at Mohawk Racetrack.

Randy Waples guided the 5-year-old gelded son of San Pellegrino-Village Beauty to a two length victory over Slave Dream and Gutsy Volo.

San Pail entered the evening just C$21,000 shy of the C$1 million mark but needed a win in order to achieve the milestone.

It was the 10th win this season and 20th lifetime for San Pail who is owned by Glenn Van Camp along with trainer Rod Hughes.

Earlier this season, the slick-gaited trotter posted the biggest win of his career when he upset the previously undefeated Lucky Jim and world champion Arch Madness in the C$720,500 Maple Leaf Trot at Mohawk.

Master Begonia beats archrivals in Meadows $27,500 trot

Meadow Lands, PA — Master Begonia, who had lost four straight races to either Michaelrowyourboat or Hidden Viggorish, turned the tables on his archrivals by defeating them both in Thursday’s $27,500 Preferred Handicap Trot at The Meadows.

Master Begonia had been getting caught late after leading through most of those recent losses. On Thursday, Dave Palone gave the 6-year-old gelded son of Master Lavec-Shimma Begonia a different trip, sitting in the pocket behind Michaelrowyourboat.

A fresh Master Begonia blew by in the “Lightning Lane,” scoring in 1:54.4. Michaelrowyourboat was a half-length back in second, with Hidden Viggorish a rallying third. Ron Burke trains Master Begonia for Burke Racing Stable and Weaver Bruscemi LLC.

Palone and Brett Miller each drove three winners on the 15-race card.

Noble Suitor wins again at Saratoga

Saratoga Springs, NY — It has been a career year for Noble Suitor at Saratoga Gaming and Raceway and on Thursday, the 4-year-old pacer continued his winning ways.

Noble Suitor was a 1:58.1 winner for Frank Coppola, Jr.

After holding a long standing maiden heading into the 2009 season, Noble Suitor has found his best strides and discovered the winning way. The Joe Facin, Jr. trainee won out of the non-winners of two lifetime back in August and has just kept winning.

On Thursday, leading driver Frank Coppola, Jr. moved Noble Suitor to the front early and the tandem never looked back, making good at even money in the night’s tenth race. The victory was the fourth in five starts for the Noble Ability pacer and served as a new lifetime mark.

On a night in which the races weren’t going extremely fast, the 1:58.1 clocking for Noble Suitor was not only a career best but also matched the time set earlier in the card by Andrew’s Lightning as the fastest of the evening.

Coppola, who had three winners on the program, has now sat behind Noble Suitor for three of his four wins during the pacer’s hot streak.

A mutuel eye-opener at Plainridge

Marlborough, MA — There’s nothing quite like a big mutuel payoff lighting up the toteboard. On Thursday at Plainridge Racecourse it happened not once, but twice during the nine-race card in two separate races.

The first eye-opener came in the first race after driver Joseph DiStefano’s trotter Serious Bambino was sent off at 102-1 and finished third, paying $43.20 to show.

But the real mutuel explosion came in the sixth race when Barry Boitnott left from post two with Quad Paradise and paid $341.20 to place. He was sent off at odds of 288-1.
