Bier wins four to take driving title at Colonial

New Kent, VA — Sean Bier guided Poweriscape to a four length win the $7,150 Horace Martin Memorial late closing series final to wrap up a four-win night that clinched leading driver honors on Wednesday night at Colonial Downs.

Bier trailed Chris Page by two wins coming into the final night of the 34-day season but quickly pulled even with wins in race three aboard Hero’s Cavalcade and race five with Imawhiner.

Page immediately regained the lead in race six with Royal Photo but was shut out the rest of the evening.

Bier evened the score at 49 with a fast-closing win with Jolly Jate in race nine and scored the decisive 50th trip to the winner’s circle with Poweriscape.

Poweriscape’s Martin Memorial win was his sixth of the eight-week Colonial meet. Trainer Tony Zubkoff and owner Summer Zubkoff claimed the 7-year-old Personal Power gelding from the penultimate leg of the Martin and reaped three straight wins at the one-turn mile.

Page finished second for the second straight year with 49 wins. 2007 leader David Ingraham was third with 33 winners.

Defending champion Manley Brown, Jr. held on to take his second straight trainer title with 21 wins. Brown held a two-win lead going into Wednesday’s card and had to withstand a late charge from Don Harmon, who had three chances to tie after pulling to within one with Katkin’s win in race one.

Harmon finished second with 20 wins. Roland Dunavant, Jr. won race six with Royal Photo to finish third with 19 winners.

Party News up in time in Batavia feature

Batavia, NY — Six of the best distaffers in Western New York went at it in the featured $8,800 Mares Open Pace on Wednesday night at Batavia Downs Gaming and it was the Ultra Racing Stable’s Party News who got home first.

Leaving sharply from the rail, Party News, with Ray Fisher, Jr. in the bike, got away in the pocket as Shaniaraider (Ken Holliday) took command after a quarter in :28.1.

Racing that way around the racetrack, Shaniaraider had a one length lead turning for home when Fisher angled Party News to the passing lane.

Needing every bit of the 500 foot Downs stretch, Party News got up at the wire to win by a neck over Shaniaraider in 1:57.1. Pauline Seelster (Tom Agosti) was three lengths back in third.

The victory was the fifth on the season for the 4-year-old Party At Artsplace-You’re In The News mare. The Bob Gruber III trainee raised her seasonal earnings to over $43,000 and lifetime earnings to over $70,000.

Case takes early lead in Mildred Williams Final

Chester, PA — Taking advantage of a perfect pocket trip, Kelly Case took the first leg of the 2008 Mildred Williams International Driving Series Final with a victory behind Firm Woody ($4.80) on Wednesday afternoon at Harrah’s Chester Casino and Racetrack.

Anne-Marie Turenne dictated the pace aboard Imperious, with Firm Woody settling in the pocket just after reaching the quarter in :28. Turenne continued unopposed on the lead through intermediate splits of :58 and 1:27, never reached by the first-over challenge of Carole Dumont and Mini Me.

With Mini Me fading in the far turn, Case vacated the pocket with Firm Woody, drawing clear in the final strides to win by 1-1/4 lengths in 1:55.3. Imperious held second from Mr Genius (Gro Formia), with Mach’s Tenor N (Elisabeth Jansen) closing from the back of the pack to finish fourth.

Firm Woody is owned and trained by Shaun Vallee.

The Mildred Williams International Driving Series Final continues Thursday, with two races each at Freehold Raceway and Dover Downs.

Lay Down The Law ends 25-race losing streak

Pompano Beach, FL — It may have taken a little more than a year, but after 25 straight losing efforts, Lay Down The Law found the winner’s circle in the sixth race pace on Wednesday at the Isle Pompano Park. Sent off at odds of 8-1, Lay Down The Law paid a generous $18.60 to win.

Lap Time Photo – Skip Smith

Lay Down The Law won the sixth race co-featured pace at Pompano Park in a romp by 11 lengths in 1:55.

Three early lead changes started off the co-featured race as Blazing Tower and driver Wally Hennessey had the early lead but gave way by the opening quarter in :28.3 to the 8-5 race favorite, Allee T, the lone filly in the field.

Allee T and driver Bruce Ranger then were passed by Scootin Around and driver Mel Turcotte, who took command and led the field to the half-mile marker in :58.

But as soon as the field entered the backstretch, driver Anthony Napolitano moved to the outside from fourth place with Lay Down The Law and they took off as if shot from a cannon, pulling away from the field at the three-quarters in 1:26.4 and leading by nine lengths at the top of the stretch.

Lay Down The Law did not let up and kicked in a :28.1 last quarter to win by 11 open lengths in 1:55. Blazing Tower was second with Allee T third.

Lay Down The Law is trained by Jake Huff and co-owned by Rosie Huff and Meir Israel Geller. He is a 4-year-old gelded son of Cape Crusader.

Bacon Hill Scott, Clearly Possessed win Monticello trotting features

Monticello, NY —Trotting races are featured on Wednesdays at Monticello Raceway and November 5 was no exception. Of the 11 races presented six were for the diagonal gaited Standardbreds.

Bacon Hill Scott won the $8,800 winners over while Clearly Possessed copped the $8,200 conditioned event.

Jordan Stratton guided Bacon Hill Scott to a 1:59.2 triumph over Master’s Light and driver Stephane Bouchard. Victory Sir was third for Jacques Primeau.

When the gate sprung Kyle DiBenedetto, with Witch And Famous, looped the inside horses to gain command from the five hole, only to yield the lead to Stephane Bouchard and Master’s Light after the quarter was trotted in :29.2.

With Master’s Light comfortably on the lead Stratton decided to move Bacon Hill Scott from fourth as the field approached the half. The two trotters raced side by side around the clubhouse turn and when they passed the three-quarters Master’s Light still had command, but at the top of the lane Bacon Hill Scott began to close the gap.

Through the stretch Bacon Hill Scott, a 6-year-old altered son of Sir Taurus, trotted to the front and scored a one length triumph. The winner is owned by Jim Ray, John Alutto, Jr., Ben Velecci and John Esposito and is trained by Ray. For Bacon Hill Scott it was his seventh seasonal victory and it raised his yearly bankroll to more than $74,000.

In the other featured trot, driver Jack Rice wheeled Clearly Possessed three-wide on the final turn and they rallied in the deep stretch to overtake pacesetter My Buddy Chimo (John Gilmour). They held off a late charge from Up Front Janet and driver Stephane Bouchard to score a head victory in a time of 2:01. Misty Moonlight, with Greg Merton aboard, took home the show dough.

Maria Rice trains Clearly Possessed for her father-in-law, Sam Rice. The 6-year-old Self Possessed gelding paid $19.40 while winning his sixth race of the year and raising his seasonal earnings to more than $39,000.
