Rays Dilemma A wins fourth straight

by Michael M. Sweeney, for Scarborough Downs

Scarborough, ME — At an age when most Standardbreds have long since left the rigors of the raceway in favor of the relaxation of retirement, Rays Dilemma A continues to rack up wins at an incredible rate.

The Scarborough Downs faithful were treated to yet another one of his thrilling dashes on Saturday (May 12) as the 14-year-old continued on a hot streak — charging around the southern Maine oval to lay claim to his fourth consecutive victory.

In typical fashion, Rays Dilemma A was hustled to the lead early by regular pilot Drew Campbell and the dashing duo commenced to lead the claiming pacers through well rated panels. The battle was joined at the top of the lane as Running Home N and Kings Edition took dead aim — but Campbell steered smartly and the veteran pacer responded – triumphant again in 2:01.4.

Co-owned by Todd Whitney and Drew Campbell of Maine, Rays Dilemma A returned $3.80, $3.40, and $2.20 to his backers. Running Home N — another 14-year-old — held the place position to key a $12.20 geriatric exacta.

Now well entrenched in his final season of competition, the veteran campaigner Rays Dilemma A has shown no sign of weariness as he continues to combat the younger generations. The Australian import has now visited the winner’s circle for the 48th time in his career.

Downs Doings: Jason Bartlett continued on his torrid pace, recording four wins on the 10-race program. Now firmly entrenched atop the leader’s board with 27 seasonal victories, Bartlett is well positioned to defend his 2006 Scarborough Downs driving title.

Rookie pilot Kevin Switzer, Jr. enjoyed a breakout day on Saturday, posting two wins on the program — one from his mother’s stable (Patricia Switzer) and one from his dad’s barn (Kevin Switzer, Sr.).

Last week’s Open class win by Shady Sabrina established a brand new track record for older pacing mares. The mile of 1:56.1 eclipsed the former mark of 1:56.3 held by Josie Venture.

Scarborough Downs proudly features live harness action every Monday, Tuesday and Saturday afternoon with first post scheduled for 3:45 p.m. (EDT). The popular Sunday matinees get underway at 12:05 p.m.
