Rockingham raises funds for hurricane relief as season ends

SALEM, NH — Rockingham Park put a ring around the historic track’s 2005 live harness racing season on Monday, and over the weekend, funds were raised on track to benefit the relief effort for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
In keeping with the trend at racetracks all over North America, Rockingham saw a decline in on-track wagering, inter-track wagering, and attendance this season. Nonetheless, the quality of racing was excellent and horsemen and fans alike thoroughly enjoyed the meet.
“The summer goes by too quickly”, said Vice President and General Manager Ed Callahan. “Business was not as strong as we would have liked, but all in all, we had a reasonable summer. We’ll continue with full card simulcasting throughout the off-season, and we are looking forward to next spring when we open for live racing on May 27th.”
Next season will be special indeed, as Rockingham will celebrate its golden anniversary in 2006. Rockingham first opened its doors on June 28, 1096.
On closing day this year, trainer Jamie Smith, who finished atop the leader board with 42 wins, was honored as the trainer of the year and Howard Summers was awarded the trophy as groom of the year. On Sunday, Coors Light Driver of the Year David Ingraham was honored as Rockingham’s driver of the year on the strength of his 138 victories.
This week, Rockingham will deliver the funds raised for the hurricane victims to the American Red Cross. Fans and employees opened their hearts and their wallets to contribute to the relief effort.
While live racing has drawn to a close, Rockingham remains open seven days per week from noon until midnight for full card simulcasting from all of the top Thoroughbred, harness and greyhound tracks and charitable bingo is available six nights per week. Trade shows and expositions are held in the grandstand and on the property throughout the fall, winter and spring.
