Rupert Rupert wins at Scarborough Downs

by Michael M. Sweeney, for Scarborough Downs

Scarborough, Maine — The name Rupert Rupert was proudly etched into the honor rolls at Scarborough Downs on Monday (July 16) as the Open pacer scorched the seaside oval in 1:54.4 to claim victory in the afternoon’s $7,000 featured race event.

The blistering mile — the fastest recorded in Maine thus far this season — places Rupert Rupert in elite historical company as that clocking represents the fourth fastest mile ever paced at Scarborough Downs.

Rupert Rupert joins Landmark Honor and Whitlock N in a three-way tie for the fourth place ranking — their efforts eclipsed only by Landmark Honor (1:54.2 in 2001), Prince Ebony (1:54 in 1990) and Hot Rod Falcon, who with driver Walter Case, Jr., set the track record of 1:52.4 during the 1993 Presidents Pace.

Rupert Rupert, a 6-year-old son of Albert Albert, is owned by Scott Dillon of Anson, Maine and is trained by Joseph Nelson.

He was driven to victory by Scarborough’s leading dash-winner, Jason Bartlett — one of six winners for Bartlett on the 11-race card.

Scarborough Downs proudly features live harness action every Monday, Tuesday and Saturday afternoon with first post scheduled for 3:45 p.m. (EDT). The popular Sunday matinees get underway at 12:05 p.m.
