San Pail was a 1:52.1 winner in the second leg of the Glorys Comet Series.
The 2011 Horse of the Year on both sides of the border repeated his 1:52.1 clocking for trainer Rod Hughes, who co-owns along with his wife Emily and breeder Glenn Van Camp. Randy Waples guided the 8-year-old son of San Pellegrino-Village Beauty to his 51st career tally.
With a short field of five going postward in the single division, Windsong Geant (Rick Zeron) were determined to have the front-end as they marched past the opening quarter in :25.4, while hanging Frenchfrysnvinegar (Jody Jamieson) on the outside.
Windsong Geant would claim the lead and marched past the half in :54.4 and three-quarters in 1:23.4. Frenchfrysnvinegar was in the pocket with San Pail looming first-over on the outside.
Turning for home, San Pail was under a comfortable hand-drive as he marched past the tempo-setter in deep stretch to score a one length victory. Windsong Geant stayed for second, over Frenchfrysnvinegar.
“He was on his game again tonight,” Hughes said following the win. “In a short field, you would think the fractions would be soft, but that wasn’t the case. He had a great week coming into tonight and we’ll have him as ready as we can for the final next week.”
With the win, San Pail increased his lifetime earnings to C$3,032,885. He paid $2.10 for the win as the favorite.
The C$125,000 series final will be contested on April 7.
