Toronto, ON — San Pail ($2.10) extended his undefeated streak to nine as he captured Monday night’s (Jan. 17) C$125,000 Glorys Comet Stakes final at Woodbine in 1:53.2, a new stakes record.
June 29, 2010 was the last time the son of San Pellegrino tasted defeat as his earnings climbed to C$1,793,965 for trainer and co-owner Rod Hughes along with breeder Glenn Van Camp.
“He raced super tonight,” Hughes commented following the race. “Randy (Waples) said he had another second in him which is also a great feeling.
“He’s done now until May. I’m not going to race him all winter with the Maple Leaf Trot and Breeders Crown hosted here in the spring and fall. He’s as sharp now as he could be so he will get some much deserved time off.”
Define The World (Paul MacDonell) left sharply off the gate from post eight and led his rivals past the opening panel in :26.3, ahead of Pembroke Prayer (Jody Jamieson) and Easy Dream (Jean Pierre Dubois).
As the talented trotters headed towards the half, Pembroke Prayer pocket-pulled to take over command, then allowed San Pail (Randy Waples), who was positioned fourth, to strike the front past the half in :56.3. The O’Brien Award finalist then led his nine rivals past three-quarters in 1:25.2 and into the stretch.
The lead was only a length turning for home until Waples asked his charge for more and San Pail responded and opened up on his rivals to score a comfortable 4-1/4 length victory. Action Broadway (Rick Zeron) exploded late in the mile to finish second with Pembroke Prayer third.
