East Rutherford, NJ — One of three modestly priced fillies Patty Hogan and her husband, Ed Lohmeyer, bought for fun, Shadowofyoursmile ($6.40, $3.40, $3.60), reached the winner’s circle for the second time in three career starts on Wednesday night at the Meadowlands.

Shadowofyoursmile covered the mile in 1:583, finishing four and a half lengths ahead of Kibibi ($4.80, $4.00) in the second race, a $10,000 trot for two-year-old fillies. It was eight and a half lengths to Fernanda Oaks ($5.60) in third.

“My wife and I bought her in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania at the Standardbred Horse Sale for $15,000,” said Lohmeyer, who trains and drives the two-year-old daughter of Donerail-–Speedrise Hanover. “She’s a real tough filly to train. Sometimes she’ll just run off on me. But the funny thing is once she gets halfway to the gate, she relaxes real well. Training her is another story. She’s one of the toughest I’ve had in 30 years. She raced real well; she was relaxed the whole way.”

After winning her pari-mutuel debut in a $16,212 division of the Reynolds Memorial Stakes at Pocono Downs on July 10, the filly was interfered with early in a New Jersey Sires Stakes event on July 15 at the Meadowlands and was never a factor.

With the victory, she has now banked $13,106 for Lohmeyer and his wife, the prominent equine surgeon Dr. Patty Hogan, whose recent patients have included Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Smarty Jones and one of the favorites in this Saturday’s Hambletonian, Eilean Donon.

“It’s been an amazing year, with all the attention on two of my patients,” said Hogan, who performs more than 1,000 operations a year.

She could not have been any happier if her filly had won a million dollar race.

In the $6,000 first division of three Hambletonian Amateur Drivers non-wagering races, Sofia Lets Go took control of the lead around the backside and opened up in the stretch for a 17 length romp in 1:562 for the mile. Diamond Trot A finished second and it was 17 lengths back to Ching Tut in third.

Driven/owned by William Mulligan and trained by Bill Popfinger, Sofia Lets Go posted her first victory of the year in her 14th start and increased his lifetime earnings to $297,258 for Mulligan of New Hope, Pennsylvania.

In the $7,000 second division, So Marvelous and driver Lon Frocione edged out Wedding Sun at the wire by a nose in 1:582. Chad Man finished one and a quarter lengths back in third.

Trained and owned by Robert Bloodgood of Pinehurst, North Carolina, So Marvelous posted his first win in his sixth start of the year and increased his lifetime earnings to $29,797.

In the $8,000 third division, Night’s Jazz surged home for a half length victory over Sunhill’s Alberto in 1:571. Rich Rewards finished one and a quarter lengths back for third.

Driven by Joe Faraldo and trained by Anthony Salerno, Night’s Jazz scored his fifth victory in his 17th start and increased his earnings to $139,537 for owners Faraldo and Peter Venaglia.
