Harrisburg, PA — The sales topper through mid-afternoon at the Standardbred Horse Sale on Wednesday (November 5) was hip number 907, Some Hearts, a black colt by Western Terror out of the Matt’s Scooter mare Heart Of The Matter.

Richard Norman signed the $120,000 ticket for the colt, who was also the sales topper for the Spring Haven Farm consignment. Spring Haven proprietor Senena Esty raised not only Some Hearts, but his dam as well.

“His mother is Heart Of The Matter,” says Esty. “We foaled and delivered her as a baby at Stony Creek Farm, which my husband and I managed until we bought this farm. She herself was a beautiful black baby; we bought her as a weanling.

“We raised her up and decided to keep her and race her ourselves,” noted Esty.

The mare went on to win 12 races and $64,939 with a 1:54.4f race record.

“We gave her to Delvin Criswell, from Ohio, and we raced her as a 2- and 3-year-old. We even raced her in the Jugette, that was a huge deal for us. My husband Jeff and I were just starting out, we hadn’t even opened our own farm yet.

“I guess you’d have to say she was one of our foundation mares, because everything out of this mare has gone on and raced nicely. Last year his brother (a full brother by Western Terror, named Western Heart, who has a record of 1:55.1 and $42,185 with two wins) brought $65,000. He’s (Some Hearts) perfectly mannered, for a stud colt, especially. He was one of the few I could show without a bit. He wasn’t a deadhead, don’t get me wrong,” she said as she rolled up her sleeve to reveal some bruises.

“I try to keep them happy and he was always a healthy, happy colt growing up. He’s got a wonderful mother. He’s the sales topper for us.”

The yearling portion of the Standardbred Horse Sale concluded on Wednesday with the gross sales for 1,046 yearlings totaling $32,720,200, against $42,765,500 for 1,094 horses in 2007, a 23.5% decrease over the prior year. The average yearling sold for $40,885 in 2007, against $29,909 in 2008, a decrease of 26.9%.
