Southern Rain seeks fifth straight in Florida Sale Stakes

Pompano Beach, FL — Mark Rorabeck’s Southern Rain will look to remain atop the Florida-bred 2-year-old colt and gelding trotting division on Wednesday (October 10) when trying to extend his winning streak to five in the featured $25,000 Florida Sale Stakes from Pompano Park.

Installed as the 4-5 morning line favorite, Southern Rain has visited the winner’s circle in seven of his nine career outings, prevailing in his last four starts by a combined 18-1/2 lengths while amassing over $31,000 in earnings during the year.

Trained by Mike Deters, Southern Rain has drawn post two for the Wednesday feature and will be driven by Bruce Ranger.

Trot Monster, the only horse to defeat Southern Rain, having accomplished that feat on two occasions, will take another attempt at knocking off the divisional leader when starting from post five on Wednesday.

Owned by John Campagnuolo and trained by Kim Sears, Trot Monster enters the Florida Sale Stakes on a minor four-race losing skid, and hasn’t gotten his picture taken since crossing the wire first in the $35,075 Florida Stallion Stakes on August 1.

Listed as the 3-1 second choice in the morning line, Trot Monster will be driven by Wally Hennessey.

A pair of Florida Sale Stakes for juvenile trotting fillies will be contested as non-wagering events at Pompano on Wednesday, with the $16,450 first division to feature the Sunshine State debut of Baileysirishdream, a winner in six of seven starts while competing exclusively in New York this year.

Owned by Barbara Bailey and trained by Richard Bailey, Baileysirishdream exits a 2-1/4 length triumph in the $86,500 final of the Kindergarten Classic Series for 2-year-old trotting fillies at Vernon Downs.

On August 12, the homebred daughter of Matchem Hanover set a Tioga Downs track record for 2-year-old trotting fillies when covering the mile in 1:58.1 to take a $10,000 leg of the Kindergarten Classic Series.

Baileysirishdream will start from post five on Wednesday, with Ranger at the controls.

The second $16,450 Florida Sale Stakes for 2-year-old filly trotters will feature a rematch between the top two finishers from last week’s Sunshine State Stakes final, Discreet Encounter and Indigo Swirl.

Owned by James Armstrong and trainer Mike Deters, Discreet Encounter stopped the timer in a lifetime best 2:02 when prevailing in last week’s marquee event for the juvenile female trotters. A winner in four of 10 outings, the daughter of Wewering will start from post three with Ranger in the sulky.

Indigo Swirl, beaten 1-3/4 lengths when finishing second to Discreet Encounter last week, will look to avenge that defeat when starting from post five on Wednesday for the ownership of Ciara Stable and Michael Polansky, and trainer Tom Harmer.

A six-time winner from nine career starts, the daughter of Wewering will be driven by Mickey McNichol.

Post time for the first non-wagering event is scheduled for 6:50 p.m., with the 12-race pari-mutuel program to commence at 7:25 p.m.
