Stakes season ends with Keystone Classic at the Meadows

by Adam Packard for the Meadows

Meadow Lands, PA – Two divisions of the two-year-old colt trot and three divisions of the two-year-old filly trot headlined the final stakes night at the Meadows Thursday night.

The first of two divisions for two-year-old colt trotters was won by Keystone Brady and driver Richard Stillings, in 1:59.2. The son of Lindy Lane has now won seven of 12 and has banked $92,612 after winning the $44,200 Keystone Classic event Thursday night.

Stillings placed Keystone Brady on the engine right out of the gait and put up quarter fractions of 29, 1:00.4, and 1:29.4, before trotting home in 29.3.

The $135,000 yearling purchase, Fraternity Party, was sitting in the garden two-hole position, but the 28-day layoff was too much to overcome and he settled for the place spot, with Jan Johnson in the sulky. Flying Scotsman and driver David Miller made a strong first-over move down the backside, but he hung late and finished third.

Keystone Brady was purchased by co-owners Richard Gillock and Chris Chambers for $6,500 as a yearling.

Mythical Lindy, co-owned by Thomas York Jr. and Joe Sbrocco, regained his winning stride in the second division of the Keystone Classic for two-year-old colt trotters, in 1:59.2.

The son of SJ’s Caviar had won three in a row, one of which was the $100,000 PASS Final, prior to losing last week at the Red Mile as the prohibitive favorite. Co-owner Joe Sbrocco mentioned that Mythical Lindy was sick last week at the Red Mile and was obviously back to his old self tonight.

“It was my plan to race him (Mythical Lindy) out of a hole. I wanted to finish strong for next week (Breeders Crown Elimination),” mentioned driver David Miller.

Viking Rojan and driver Trond Smedshammer closed late to nip Penn Monie Mosie for the place spot.

Mythical Lindy has made $237,763 in his nine lifetime starts. He was purchased for $60,000 as a yearling.

David Miller picked up the catch drive on Right On Renee and turned it into gold as he won the first of three divisions of the two-year-old Keystone Classic events, in 2:00.4.

Making the initial start of her career, Right On Renee, an $80,000 yearling purchase, came flying late on the outside to narrowly defeat Pembroke Spice by a nose. Right On Renee geared up for this Keystone Classic race in two Red Mile qualifiers and trainer Steve Elliott pushed all the right buttons as she was ready on first asking.

Photographia, driven by Richard Stillings, finished third.

The PASS Champion for two-year-old filly trotters, Undercover Lover, was upset in the second division by Upmarket Hanover and driver Mike Wilder, in 2:00.

In the PASS Final, Upmarket Hanover finished second to Undercover Lover, but she reversed the roles as a two-hole trip earned Upmarket Hanover the victory. Upmarket Hanover, an $8,000 yearling purchase, has now banked $104,583 in 13 lifetime starts.

Brushette and driver Jan Johnson made a first-over move down the backside, but couldn’t hold off the lightning lane charge of Upmarket Hanover. Favored Undercover Lover had to settle for the show spot.

Heather Wilder and Dan Altmeyer co-own daughter of SJ’s Photo.

The final division and final stakes race of 2006 at the Meadows was won by Indy’s Lindy and driver Jan Johnson, in 2:00.

Driver Dave Palone came to drive just one horse, Those Blue Eyes, but the early leader tired late and gave way to Indy’s Lindy. Closing up the lightning lane was Sugar N Lindy and Trond Smedshammer, but they could do no better than second. Those Blue Eyes did hold on for the third spot.

With the victory Indy’s Lindy now has won two of her last three starts and has collected $23,358 in seven lifetime starts.

Scuderia O.M. SRL and Scuderia Tre Bessi Sas own the daughter of SJ’s Caviar.
