Super Kay makes it five in a row

Anderson, IN — Super Kay wouldn’t back down in the third leg of the $10,000 Genesis Series at Hoosier Park.

The three-year-old filly, trained and driven by Joe Putnam, has managed to take first in all three legs of the Genesis series this year. The victory puts Super Kay at five for six in her starts this season.

“She’s a good filly with a lot of spirit,” said Putnam. “She is definitely on top of her game.”

The post position 10 draw had no effect on Super Kay’s performance — or Putnam’s strategy.

“I played it by ear on the back tier. The one couldn’t get out, neither could the two, but I didn’t want to force my way out of there,” Putnam said. “I knew I could still get speed.”

Super Kay was parked going down the backstretch, which was good enough to move from the outside into first place after the half. After that, Super Kay managed to get that predicted speed as the duo floated to clear the front.

Kimberly Coe and Brian Carpenter got a good trip behind Super Kay throughout the mile. In the stretch, Kimberly Coe stepped up to challenge Super Kay for the lead, but could not surpass Super Kay’s exquisite form.

Super Kay trotted home in 2:001 to take first place honors. The daughter of Super Ben Joe paid $3.60, $2.80, and $3.20 across the board for the win. She is owned by Larry W. Miller of Springport, Indiana. Kimberly Coe finished a length and three-quarters back in second. Callico Cat and Trent Bates held on to third place after claiming it at the half.

Top trotters will return to compete for the $40,000 purse in the Genesis Final, which will be held on Hoosier Cup Night, Saturday, May 29. The race will be one of several finals to join the $500,000 (est.) Hoosier Cup, to push purses over the $1 million mark. Also, Rupert from Survivor: All-Stars will make a special guest appearance and one lucky fan will drive home in a brand new car, courtesy of Payton Wells Automotive Group.
