Sutton vaults to top of driver standings at Hoosier

by Ryan Hubbard, Hoosier Park Publicity Department

Driver Josh Sutton stormed through the racing program to win five consecutive events Thursday, April 27 at Hoosier Park. Coming into the evening, the young and talented pilot was one win behind leader Ricky Macomber Jr. in the driver standings at the seven-eighths mile oval. He now holds a clear-cut lead atop the driver colony with 24 victories.

“I was on a great roll tonight,” said Sutton. “I really was not surprised, nor did any horse surprise me. They were all good horses and raced really well. I was looking at the program before the races and saw how many opportunities I had. You just win, take your picture, get back, and get ready for the post parade for the next race.”

With 11 scheduled mounts, Sutton took his first win of the night in the sixth race behind Smokies Spunk. He followed that trip to the winner’s circle in the seventh, piloting Just Believe In Me.

The remaining three victories came back-to-back with Armbro Bohemian, American Master, and C J Blaze, wrapping up the impressive evening for the 24-year-old driver. The native of Henderson, Ky. celebrated his birthday this week.

Sutton has taken an early lead in the driver standings in the first 18 racing days at the Anderson, Ind. track. He has been fluctuating between second and third places since opening night.

Sutton has won a few driving titles to add to his resume. He has been the leading driver at The Red Mile in Lexington, Ky. for the past two years. He also holds a title from Thunder Ridge in Prestonburg, Ky. He won six races on one racing card. Last year was his breakout season when he won a total of 230 races.

“I just improve every year I come back to Hoosier Park,” said Sutton. “With winning the driver titles down at The Red Mile, I think people are starting to notice me more and more. I have been getting a lot of exposure since then. All you need is a lot of luck when you go out there and race.”
