Switzer sizzles at Scarborough Downs

by Michael M. Sweeney, for Scarborough Downs

Scarborough, Maine — Kevin Switzer improved his position in all categories on the Scarborough Downs leader’s board on Tuesday, May 15, steering four horses into the winner’s circle during the 10-race program. Better news still for Switzer, all four raced under the blue and black banner of his own racing stable — three of them owned directly by Switzer himself.

Switzer-fest got underway quite promptly on the program as he engineered a courageous come-from-behind victory with the longshot Diamonds Destiny in the back-half of the Daily Double. The rallying effort featured a bold three-wide power move as the daughter of Wilcos Data zoomed from last to first to claim her second win of the season.

Waiting until the back-half of the Mid-Double wager to pounce again, Switzer had Heather K comfortably on top before the gate had sprung. The well-bred daughter of Pacific Fella won her fourth of the year by open lengths, as she bottomed out the claiming field in a zippy 1:58 flat. This Switzer entry was sent away as the bettor’s choice.

The punters had now caught on as they piled aboard the Switzer Express for the inevitable journey to “Victory Ville” where Eyes A Flashing N was waiting for her turn on the track. The torrid teamster wasted little time in buying a roundtrip winner’s circle ticket — besting a pocket-sitting Cranmeadow Kiana to cross the wire in front.

Shady Sabrina topped the Switzer surge as the new track record holder claimed victory in her second straight distaff Open at The Downs — leisurely touring the seaside oval in 1:57.2 for owner Lorna Cohen of Providence, R.I.

The Kevin Switzer stable now sits firmly atop the trainer standings at Scarborough, having sent 13 winners to post this season. The Richard Bartlett barn drops to second on the list with 10 top tallies.

Scarborough Downs proudly features live harness action every Monday, Tuesday and Saturday afternoon with first post scheduled for 3:45 p.m. (EDT). The popular Sunday matinees get underway at 12:05 p.m.

A special Preakness performance has been scheduled for this coming Saturday (May 19) with first post slated for 12:05 p.m.
