The Mohegan Pan, Lisfinny return in Mohawk qualifiers

Campbellville, ON — Six more entries from the formidable stable of Bob McIntosh qualified Monday morning (June 15) at Mohawk, including 4-year-olds The Mohegan Pan and Lisfinny, who stepped a mile together in 1:53.3.

Though The Mohegan Pan had lately become known as Nebupanezzar’s big brother, he has been a serious stakes presence in his own right, with top-three placings in last year’s Confederation Cup (up against Somebeachsomewhere), Canadian Breeders Championship, and the Simcoe.

A handsome son of No Pan Intended out of Western Wonder, The Mohegan Pan has earned $535,110 for owner/breeder Peter Pan Stables.

Lisfinny, by The Panderosa out of the Abercrombie mare Lisaleen, is no slouch either, having bankrolled $238,815 in his 3-year-old season after having been unraced at two. He is owned by McIntosh in partnership with C S X Stables and Al McIntosh Holdings.

Both have enjoyed about six months off since their last start of 2008, in the Ontario Sires Stakes Super Final at Woodbine (in the case of The Mohegan Pan), and the Matron at Dover Downs (for Lisfinny).

“We’re happy with the way he’s come back,” assistant trainer Tracy Wilcox said of The Mohegan Pan. “He qualified well and we’re very happy with the time. He was turned out for over two months, and then Bob took about four months to bring him back. We’ll let the dust settle and digest today’s results, and then probably go again (in a qualifier). So far, so good.

“Lisfinny is on the same program. Both wintered well and have come back well, and they look fit, so we’ll see what happens.”

Also hailing from the McIntosh stable this morning was sophomore filly West Of L A, who last year was second in the Eternal Camnation Stakes, the Whenuwishuponastar final, and an elimination of the She’s A Great Lady Stakes. She paced her mile in 1:59 for Steve Condren, coming in fifth to Stonebridge Elan and Simon Allard, who stopped the timer in 1:56.

“(West Of L A) was a little dull this morning,” admitted Wilcox. “We’re going to get her checked out. We were a little disappointed in her today. Last week she acted up a bit warming up, and we elected to just train her instead.”

Other qualifying winners Monday morning included Mannerheim (Riina Rekila/Riina Rekila, 2:00), Carrland Eddy (Randy Waples/Gary Kingshott, 2:00.3), and Lee Ave (Sylvain Filion/Tim Pinske, 1:56.1).
