Tys Star scores at Cal-Expo

from Cal-Expo Raceway

Sacramento, CA — Tys Star ($2.80) just held off Bughouse by a head in the featured trot at Cal-Expo on Wednesday evening, June 15. Seven youngsters meeting certain conditions showed up to race for a piece of the $2,500 purse.

Sent off as the overwhelming choice in the wagering, Lou Pena had a peck of trouble getting Tys Star by Fox Valley Taboo from the start and did not find the pylons until past the opening quarter.

Ed Hensley tipped Rowdy DMC out first over on the far turn and Sparky (don’t call me Edgar) Clarke followed that cover with Bughouse. The latter would have worn Tys Star down if there had been another 10 yards to race, but, alas, it was only a mile race. Rowdy DMC finished third. The winner stopped the timer in 2:03 flat.

Bill Mezo, Wade Miller, and Pena own the winner and Pena also trains him. He is a three-year-old altered son of Karen’s Rowdy One, out of the Hunter’s Star dam Belle Belle. This was his second win in six lifetime starts.
