Vesuvio AS bids for third straight in $85,000 NJSS Final

by Carol Hodes, for the New Jersey Sire Stakes

Freehold, NJ — Vesuvio AS, after a less than auspicious debut, has turned in back-to-back victories heading into the $85,000 New Jersey Sire Stakes Final for 2-year-old trotting colts and geldings on September 3 at Freehold Raceway.

One of three first crop sons of Windsong’s Legacy in the eight-colt final, Vesuvio blew up at the start of his first pari-mutuel start in the opening round of NJSS action on August 13 but rebounded to turn in matching 4-1/2 length victories on August 20 and August 27.

Jim Meittinis will be at the lines of Vesuvio AS for the New Jersey Sire Stakes Final, the featured sixth race. The colt will leave from post five in the field of seven.

The other two finalists by the ill-fated Triple Crown-winning Windsong’s Legacy are Mystro Hanover and Meyer Winsky.

Trained by Swedish-born Anette Lorentzon, Vesuvio AS has banked $34,000 for ACL Stuteri AB, the nom de course of breeder Ann-Christin Lorentzon and John Erik Magnusson.

The NJSS stakes and Freehold track record for 2-year-old trotting colts is 1:58.3 set by Keystone Savage (Yankee Glide) on September 29, 2005.
