“Willie” eyes repeat in Freehold trot

by Don Bielak, publicity director, Freehold Raceway

Freehold, NJ — Fresh off a convincing, pacesetting victory a week ago, Harold Schiffman’s Willie B A Saluki has been installed as the 2-1 morning line choice in the featured $4,900 conditioned trot at Freehold Raceway on Thursday.

Willie B A Saluki has been a model of consistency this year so far. All told, the six-year-old Master Willie gelding sports a 3-0-1 across the board record in five starts in 2004. His $7,863 in earnings this season makes him the richest horse in the field and his 2:001 score at Freehold in his latest outing makes him the fastest.

Jeff Gregory, who has handled Willie B A Saluki in all of his charted races, will drive for trainer Darran Cassar. The duo will leave the gate from post four.

One interesting possibility is Gia’s Eternal. The five-year-old daughter of Giant Triumph will be making her local bow in Thursday’s main event. Most recently, Gia’s Eternal registered a 2:022 win at the Meadows on January 29, in her only start of the year. The Peter Walsh-trainee will be meeting similar competition on Thursday, and may prove a serious contender if she can maintain that sharp form.

Gia’s Eternal will start from post six as the 3-1 second choice in the early line. Hall of Famer Cat Manzi has been given the driving assignment.

Hail To The Crown, Classic Andy, Inquisitive, OB Ben, Joe Plumsted and Club Pines comprise the remainder of the field.

Freehold’s 11 race Thursday slate will get underway with a first post of 12:30 p.m.
