Yonkers, NY — Yonkers Raceway played the role of proud host to the Edward Weiner & Edward Yarock Equine Scholarship Fund Dinner on Thursday, July 30. Some 140 guests enjoyed the races in the Empire Terrace, with many taking part in post-race presentations.

A total of $19,000 in scholarships — raised through private donations — were handed out to 11 college and college-bound students. First-place winners Brittany Schwartz and Chelsea Fahy each received their $5,000 checks (actually, really large facsimiles) in the winner’s circle.

The event, co-sponsored by Financial Access Network and Mrs. Jean Weiner and Jeffery and Andrea Weiner, was coordinated by horse owner and amateur driver David Yarock.

“This is the first time we’ve awarded the scholarships, and we’re happy that the students and sponsors were both very interested,” Yarock said. “Every student who put in for a scholarship was awarded one, ranging from $500 to $5,000.

“My friend, Phil Winkler, who is vice president of our scholarship committee, is also the person who helped get me involved in harness racing. We decided to open up the awards to either students who are pursuing an equine education, or those who have a family member employed in the industry. We’re hoping to expand the program in the future.”

Each of the 13 races on the wagering card was sponsored by a scholarship supporter, and the evening also included a silent auction.

In an unrelated matter, leading driver Jason Bartlett added to his own scholarship program, winning seven races — including five consecutive — during the card.
