Alcohol breath sample required for Pennsylvania fairs effective July 22

Harrisburg, PA — In an effort to maintain the health, wellness and safety of the participants competing at the Pennsylvania County Fairs and the one-or two-day harness racing events; the following policy shall apply.

All drivers shall be required to provide an alcohol breath sample one­-hour prior to the first post time. Additionally, any individual driving a horse on the racetrack surface for the purposes of warming up are also subject to an alcohol breath sample at the discretion of the Commission. The Commission reserves the right to randomly test drivers or other individuals throughout race card without or for cause.

In the event of a positive test, the individual shall be afforded a second alcohol breath test 20 minutes following the first positive test. If the second test falls below .035 percent is shall constitute a negative test.

If the second test remains above a .035 percent, the individual shall be removed from their drives for the remainder of the race card and be issued a $500 and a 5-day suspension.

This policy shall take effect Monday (July 22).
